Guide on the traceable calibration of in situ EMS and PTI methods to determine aerosol light absorption coefficients as a function of the light source wavelength and aerosol SSA using reference gases and aerosols with an uncertainty budget (target ≤10 %)
Report on the generation of a traceability chain for transferring light absorption calibrations between EMS and PTI reference methods and field instrumentation used for environmental measurements of BC using photoacoustic spectrometers as the transfer instrument.
D3: Relationship between eBC, rBC and EC
Report on the establishment of the relationship between eBC mass, rBC mass and EC mass (EN 16909:2017) based on the range of MAC values established in an intercomparison of aerosol absorption and EC mass using different monodisperse soot and aged soot aerosols (mobility diameter range 70 – 400 nm) with an uncertainty based on traceable measurements of light absorption coefficient and EC mass.
D4: Report on the development of an SOP for rBC particle mass measurements
Report on the development of an SOP for rBC particle mass measurements with an uncertainty determination, based on the exposure of commercial laser incandescent instruments (SP2) to soot generator (eg. miniCAST) generated bulk and mono-size aerosols (range 70 – 400 nm) both with and without SOM coating during a laboratory inter-comparison exercise
D5: Development of procedures for the calibration of filter-based light absorption photometers
Report on the development of procedures for the calibration of filter-based light absorption photometers for aerosol light absorption and eBC mass concentration against the reference methods (PTI, EMS) and transfer instruments (e.g PAX) using a series of well-defined synthetic aerosols with an SSA from < 0.5 to almost 1
D6: Report on the determination of wavelength-dependent MAC values
Report on the determination of wavelength-dependent MAC values and wavelength dependent filter-based light absorption photometer calibration factors including multiple scattering factors, with their associated measurement uncertainties (target uncertainties < 15 % for 95 % confidence level) based on the calibration in D5
D7: Traceable reference methods for determining aerosol light absorption coefficients
Report on the determination of wavelength-dependent MAC values and wavelength dependent filter-based light absorption photometer calibration factors including multiple scattering factors, with their associated measurement uncertainties (target uncertainties < 15 % for 95 % confidence level) based on the calibration in D5
Consolidated report based on D1 to D7 submitted to CEN/TC 264, CEN/TC 264/WG 35 and ISO/TC 146/SC 3 with evidence of its submission for consideration for incorporation into new standards for determining aerosol light absorption coefficients (i.e. at multiple wavelengths) and materials and methods for calibrating filter-based photometers against the reference method(s) by these committees
